Crisis Planning: Predict, Prevent and Plan

The Recovery Training Collaborative of Mecklenburg’s PROMISE has received a grant from Mecklenburg County's LME to provide a series of crisis prevention and planning trainings for individuals served in the Adult Mental Health, Developmental Disability and Substance Abuse systems, family members and all service providers. These trainings are developed for participants to learn the significance of crisis planning and how to write a crisis plan that emphasizes prevention as a wellness tool.

A good, usable crisis plan is one of the most powerful wellness tools for all people. When well developed, it can serve as a guide to prevent a crisis and reduce the intensity of loss when one does occur! The crisis education series is designed for all audiences; one series is devoted to assisting students and their families to develop their own crisis plan focusing on prevention, and the other series is designed for professionals to assist in developing creative, individualized and effective crisis plans. These trainings are not only focused on mental health and addiction, rather there are series for individuals with developmental disabilities, and their team members.

Crisis Education for Individuals in Recovery and Crisis Education to Support Self-Determination are both 2 day classes that were developed to help participants identify his/her definition of a personal crisis, learn skills to establish their own crisis plan, and identify their own wellness management skills and resources to prevent a crisis from occurring and manage one when it does.

Class 1 provides participants with the foundation needed to understand what a crisis looks like and feels like to them. It does so by presenting the four “universal” stages of a crisis and helps them apply this process to their own individual circumstances. In this class, participants also focus on their current coping skills and resources and identify ways to enhance both.

During class 2, participants learn about the importance of preparing a crisis plan, while gathering tools to create their own individual “wellness toolbox.” Various styles of crisis plans are presented and each participant will leave the class having developed one that is unique and usable to them.
